Canadian Wooden Domes - Reinventing Domed Dwellings
Think you know what a dome is? I thought I knew. I recalled the domes that some of my friends built and lived in. Funky structures that never seemed to live up to their potential as perhaps the best design for living and work spaces. Maybe okay for hippy communes of the 60s or back-to-the-landers of the 70s, but definitely not something you’d expect to find as suburban homes for the masses.
Well a company from the Southern Interior of BC has set out to change all this.
Their revolutionary design permits the construction of aesthetically-pleasing, environmentally-conscious, energy-efficient and well-engineered domes that are also remarkably affordable and quick to put up. Sound too good to be true?
Have a look for yourself!
We were completely enthralled with the domes. So much so, our cameraman has begun serious investigation of them as a possibility for his next home. We were also very impressed with the ethics of the company itself. Altus Engineering Ltd. Their vision is “to be an international leader in the design, development, production and marketing of sustainable eco-friendly buildings by leveraging [their] innovative dome building technology.” They also “aspire to be an industry leader in protecting the environment and in enhancing the quality of life for communities around the globe.” Just the kind of company we here at EKOS like to support!
